Dr Sharland graduated from Sydney University in 1989. He first came to Darwin in 1991 as a registrar in training. He worked in Belfast in 1993 doing further training in trauma and obtaining his fellowship with the Royal College of Ireland. He returned to Australia and completed his orthopaedic training in 1999 in the Newcastle training scheme. He then completed a shoulder fellowship with Professor Sonnabend in Sydney.

In 2000, Dr Sharland was appointed as the Director of Orthopaedics at Royal Darwin Hospital and has continued to work at both Royal Darwin Hospital and Darwin Private Hospital since then, as well as providing orthopaedic services to Katherine District Hospital.

As a long-term resident, Dr Sharland understands the unique circumstances of many Territorians. He prides himself on a comprehensive and attentive approach to patient care from the initial consult, through to the hospital stay and to the post-op visits.
